What is counselling?

Sometimes life can throw difficulties our way and it can jolt us, shake us even, leaving us feeling lost and disconnected. Counselling can help us to reconnect to ourselves by exploring our narratives, gaining a deeper understanding of who we are, and to develop a better relationship with ourselves and others. It offers you a space to do this at your own pace and without judgement.

A counsellor is there to listen with the aim of helping you gain some clarity through talking and exploration. They will respond in ways that are beneficial to you, and to help you find possible solutions to challenges or difficulties that are being experienced or reflected upon. Sometimes this process can feel freeing helping you to feel lighter, on the other hand, it can also be a painful experience or paradoxically both. Either way, a counsellors role will involve supporting you throughout the process of the work together.

Choosing a counsellor

Making the decision to embark on having counselling can be an incredibly daunting process so choosing the right counsellor is an important part of that decision. There are different approaches in terms of the ways counsellors work so it may be worth taking time to read on these various approaches which should help you with your decision. You may want to see other counsellors first to establish who you feel more at ease with, only you can make that judgement.

(Please see my FAQ’s page for more details on the ways in which I work)

In addition, you may have a particular issue that you wish to work on and it may be that a counsellor with experience of that particular issue may be able to provide a more effective way of working with you. However, what is most important is that you feel comfortable and safe with the counsellor, and engage in ways that feel collaborative. In light of this, this can also take time to build within the therapeutic relationship.
